Kilimanjaro Trek - Machame Route

Machame may be the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. This is a tents-only route which makes
it better suited to rough-and-ready climbers.

Perhaps that’s how it got its nickname,
“The Whiskey Route.” This is a six-day adventure with longer walking distances than the previous routes.

DAY 1   Departing from USA and connecting Via London.

DAY 2   Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport in the evening. You will be met with the Shades of Africa Tour Guide OR Airport representative and be transferred to the Mountian Inn for dinner and overnight.
Mountian Inn (Bed and Breakfast)

DAY 3   After the breakfast at the Mountain Inn, you will be briefed about Mount Kilimanjaro and equipment check. Start your ascent through coffee and banana plantations and almost immediately enter the rainforest. Yes, it will probably rain, transforming the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery track. Your five hours of walking today will be interrupted by a welcome lunch break. You’ll reach Machame Camping area in the afternoon and your porters will have your tents erected before you arrive. Warm clothes and a toasty sleeping bag will come in handy as night temperatures will drop to the freezing point.
Machame Hut (9,800 feet)

DAY 4   You’ll face a steep morning climb with stunning views of Kibo Peak. Today’s task is six hours of intense climbing.

Shira Hut (12,500 feet)

DAY 5   Trek over the tricky lava ridges of the glacier. Nearly seven hours of walking and some climbers will feel the first symptoms of short breath, headache and irritability. The true benefits of slow acclimatization will be rewarded however.

Great Barranco Camp (12,800 feet)

DAY 6   The Great Barranco Wall is a rather imposing sight at first glimpse. But you will find it fairly easy to climb. Six to eight hours walking will take you through ridges and valleys and past the last water stop. There is no water at the Barafu Camp. Barafu is Swahili for ice and the camp is situated on a bleak and hostile crag. Your tent is pitched on a narrow, tenuous ridge completely exposed to the gales and storms of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Barafu Hut (15,090 feet)

DAY 7   A long day and an early start to reach the crater rim at Stella Point in time for the sunrise. Then, it’s on to Uhuru Peak (19,340 feet), the highest point in Africa. Descend to Barafu and down to Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp (9,800 feet)

DAY 8   Continue your descent to the Mweka Park Gate where your Shades of Africa Guide will meet you for transfer to the lodge.

Mountian Inn (Bed and breakfast)

DAY 9   Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back to America or a safari or coast extension.
